Deep Space Nine is an old Cardassian base (Terok Nor) now under Federation control, since the occupation of Bajor by the Cardassian is over. Since the discovery of the Wormhole that allow passage to the Gamma Quadrant, the small base has taken a lot of importance and is now a strategic place, military and commercially.
